Translation Edit Bar

The Translation Edit bar (Figure 1) is the primary place for translating and editing a selected translation unit.  All resource types including image resources can be translated in this area.  The two main fields in the Translation Edit bar are the Source and Target edit fields.

Features

The Translation Edit bar has the following features:

Changed Source Indication

RC-WinTrans retains the previous source data when updating a translation file (after source file changes).  Previous translation text data is also retained between the current and previous translation sessions.  Changes are displayed at the top of the Translation Edit bar in the Previous Source and Current Source fields.  Changes are highlighted in the Current Source field so that you can easily see exactly what has changed (Figure 1).

Leading/Trailing Spaces Indication

Leading and trailing spaces are indicated with a colored underline mark.

Spelling Error Indication

(Target edit field) Words for which the spell checker has detected a potential spelling error are shown in red font.  The automatic spell check must be enabled for this feature.

Notes

Notes can be attached to the current translation unit by entering a comment in the Note edit field.

NOTE:  The comment field can be hidden and its size can be adjusted on the "Note" Field property page in the Translation Edit Bar Settings dialog box.  Use the Properties button (shown right) at the bottom of the Translation Edit bar to open this dialog box.

Character Map

Use the Character Map command button (shown right) to select and insert a special/foreign character in the target text.

Dictionary Found Results List

This list found in the lower portion of the Translation Edit bar displays the results of a Find Translation (in dictionaries) operation.  (More details further on...)

Find Translation Operation

Search for a translation by entering the source text in the Source edit field and pressing the ENTER key while the Source edit field has the focus.  Translations that are found are listed in the Dictionary Found Results list located below the Target edit field.

See also:  "Finding Translations in Dictionaries."

Resource Type Editor

Use the Resource Type Editor command button (shown right) to open an available resource type editor for the current translation unit.

Image and Icon Translation

Images and icons are shown in the Translation Edit bar if the current translation unit is an image or icon resource.  Additional command buttons are shown and can be used to access an external image editor to edit the image or icon.

Automatic Translation of Repetitions

Repetitions are automatically translated all at once in the Repetitions window.  The number of repetitions is indicated on the OK ( _ ) command button.

See also:  "Translating Identical Source Texts (Repetitions)."

Quick Active Window Change

Use the "Ctrl+I" key combination to switch the input focus between the currently active window (e.g., the Text Table view) and the Translation Edit field.

Command Customization

You can determine whether the OK or the OK Next command will be executed upon pressing the Enter key.  This can be done on the General Settings property page in the Translation Edit Bar Settings dialog box.  OK simply accepts the translation while the OK Next command accepts the translation and automatically moves to the next non-translated item.

Non-Textual Resource Types

For a unique translation consisting of different resources, the Translation Edit bar supports more than just the translation of text resources.  VersionInfo entries, accelerator keys, image and icon resources are also localized through the Translation Edit bar (Figure 2).  The Source and Target fields can display image and icon resources.  Additional command buttons appear in the edit fields to handle the localization of image resources.

See also:  "Resource Type Editors."

If there is a specialized resource type editor available for the active translation unit, it can be opened using the Resource Type Editor command button.  Making use of a resource type editor is recommended over editing a non-textual resource type directly in the Translation Edit bar.

Images

Image and icon resources are "translated" using an external graphic program.  The Translation Edit bar supports the translation of image resources by saving a source image (or an existing target image) to a file and call up an external tool to edit the file.  The edited image file can then be used as the target image by using the Load from File command which takes the file and saves the data as target data to the translation database.

Dictionary Found Results List

The Dictionary Found Results list displays those translations that have been found for the current source text as the result of a find translation operation.  This is usually text found in a dictionary, but can also be alternate translations that are attached to the active translation unit.  Alternate translations are listed automatically whereas text from a dictionary is listed after a find translation command has been executed.

See also:  "Finding Translations in Dictionaries."

To use a translation shown in the list use the Get Translation command button which appears directly in the selected line (Figure 3).  The translation text will then be copied into the Target edit field.

A right mouse-click calls up a local menu containing various commands for the Dictionary Found Results list.
